KEY POINTS:
The Motor Trade Association (MTA) wants regular emission testing of all vehicles on New Zealand roads as soon as is practical.
"This is where the true potential lies for reducing vehicle emissions," says MTA spokesman, Andy Cuming. Associate Transport Minister Judith Tizard recently launched the new programme to test all vehicles when being imported.
"This new test programme is excellent, and it is good that all cars being brought into New Zealand are cleaner and will actively improve the fleet," said Cumming.
"For the same reason, there is so much to be gained by addressing the more than 2.5 million vehicles already on New Zealand roads."
