The ash cloud from last night's Tongariro eruption is spreading from to the east of the central North Island volcano.
The Civil Defence warns the ash could reach people in the Waikato, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, Manawatu-Wanganui, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki. It has already been reported as far east as SH5 near Te Haroto and in Napier.
The predicted ashfall area can be seen here.
The Civil Defence advises people in affected areas to:
- Stay indoors: volcanic ash is a health hazard, especially if you suffer from breathing difficulty. If outside, seek shelter (e.g. in a car or building)
