A fire that damaged a large tent used for concerts and other events at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland is being treated as suspicious, the Fire Service said today.
Firefighters last night saved the huge circus-type structure from being destroyed.
Fire safety officer Ray Coleman said the incident was being treated as suspicious and police had been called in.
He could not comment further as the investigation was not due to start until later this morning.
The Fire Service's Auckland communications centre shift manager, Jaron Phillips, said last night that about 50 square metres of the Super Top tent, made of PVC, had been burnt out.
The blaze began among rolls of PVC under the stage area, creating flames and dense smoke, and firefighters had to use breathing apparatus.
Mr Phillips said he did not know if anyone had been in the tent when the fire started but the area was evacuated and there were no injuries.
