Mt Maunganui Maori are seeking the return of Mauao, Mt Maunganui's distinctive mount, under a controversial proposal aimed at giving the mountain the same historic status as Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Egmont/Taranaki.
However, the move, which is still to receive Government blessing, has alarmed Act MP Ken Shirley and sparked warnings from Tauranga mayor Jan Beange of a "fear-based" backlash.
But Maori have said there would be no change to the status of Mauao as a public reserve and no restrictions on public access.
Tauranga-based list MP and Treaty Negotiations Minister Margaret Wilson said it was important for the three iwi involved - Ngaiterangi, Ngati Ranginui and Ngati Pukenga - to have their relationship with Mauao acknowledged.
But Mr Shirley claimed the move could fuel antagonism and lead to widening social conflict.
