Police have named the man killed on the Mount Hutt Ski field Road on Monday as Arthur Richardson.
Police were notified Mr Richardson, 60, from Christchurch, was missing when he did not return from a day on the slopes.
They called for help from ski area management at midnight when there was still no sign of him.
Mr Richardson's car was found at the bottom of a steep gully early yesterday morning. His body was found nearby. It is believed his car left the road as it was travelling down the hill.
Inquiries are continuing into the cause of the crash.
