A prisoner has died after a day on life support following a self-harm incident in Mt Eden prison, the Herald has learned.
The incident occurred overnight Sunday. The prisoner was found alive and able to be stabilised for transport to hospital. The Herald was told he was on life supportyesterday, which was confirmed by acting prison director Dennis Goodin.
This morning, Mr Goodin said: "I can confirm a prisoner passed away in hospital last night after life support was switched off. The prisoner had been on life support following an apparent self-harm attempt.
"Medical attention was given to the prisoner at the (prison) and he was taken to hospital for further treatment."
The inmate's death would investigated by the coroner. A separate Corrections investigation would also take place.
Self-harm incidents are rare at Mt Eden, which has been under Serco's management but is currently being managed by the Department of Corrections after allegations of prisoner violence.
Between 2009 and May this year there were 115 self-harm incidents in New Zealand prisons.
Of the 35 unnatural deaths over the past five years - including murder, overdose and suicide - just one person has taken their own life while Mt Eden prison was privately managed.
There were five self-harm incidents of 115 nationally which took place under Serco's watch at Mt Eden. One death and a number of possible self-harm attempts are still being investigated.
Corrections conducts health screenings when offenders enter and are transferred between prisons. A mental health screening tool and suicide prevention framework has also been developed.
