A committee of MPs will hold an inquiry into New Zealand's relationship with Tonga following the kingdom's efforts to stymie change.
Tonga recently altered its constitution to end the right of courts to review the King's actions and to sharply curtail freedom of the press.
United Future leader Peter Dunne, who chairs the foreign affairs, defence and trade select committee, said the inquiry would cover human rights issues.
Progressive Party MP Matt Robson, who proposed the inquiry, said there was deep-seated "corruption and repression" in Tonga.
"It's up to New Zealand to make sure we act in the best interests of the people and don't just continue relationships with what has proved to be a very corrupt and venal ruling class in Tonga."
