Northland MP John Carter is recovering from surgery for bowel cancer.
Mr Carter was comfortable after having surgery in Wellington's Wakefield Hospital yesterday, a spokesperson from his parliamentary office said.
The National MP was recently diagnosed with an early, isolated case of bowel cancer.
His surgeon said the operation had gone well and he had found nothing unexpected.
Mr Carter, who is expected to make a full recovery, is likely to be away from Parliament for six weeks.
Whangarei MP Phil Heatley visited his fellow National MP last night.
"Knowing John he won't want to be out of circulation for too long," Mr Heatley said.
