The Progressive Party has called for a balanced review of the immigration system and warned against inflammatory politicking by MPs.
The Government is to review the system and the appeal and removal process.
Progressive deputy Matt Robson said he feared outbursts by New Zealand First leader Winston Peters and other MPs might lead to ill-advised plans for change in an "atmosphere of hysteria".
Mr Peters persistently demands lower immigration rates and frequently accuses the Immigration Service of allowing people with criminal records into the country.
Mr Robson said the review needed to proceed in a balanced manner which would take into account the need for new settlers and practices to treat them fairly.
