People who took part in a beach protest against drilling for oil believes their movement against exploration is growing.
Thousands took part in demonstrations on the North Island's west coast supporting the Oil Free Flotilla, which is protesting against drilling off Raglan.
Mark Dobson was part of the demonstration, and says the passion people showed is encouraging.
"When people stood up to apartheid and they stood up to nuclear testing and they're remembering now and I think they're saying 'we've lost control of New Zealand' and the Government is going in the wrong direction, we need to help them steer a different course."
Mr Dobson says there are plenty of alternatives to fossil fuels - his car runs on vegetable oil from a fish and chip shop and a splash of diesel.
