KEY POINTS:
City bound traffic on Auckland's northern motorway faced a long and slow trip into town today after a van hit a motorway overbridge.
Police closed part of the motorway from Silverdale about 20km north of the harbour bridge after the van hit an overbridge at about 6am, seriously injuring the driver.
Traffic was diverted down the old State Highway One, through Albany, and serious delays were expected for city bound traffic.
One driver described the incident as a "shambles", saying motorists received no instructions from police at the scene.
She said traffic was a slow crawl through Albany and some drivers had decided to try the East Coast Road.
