Motorists in both the South Island and the Wellington area are being told they need to exercise extreme caution this morning.
Freezing conditions in Canterbury and Otago have made for treacherous driving conditions.
Inspector Warren Kemp said areas around Oxford, Christchurch and Akaroa have black ice on the roads.
In the Dunedin suburb of Momona, where the city's airport is based, temperatures reached around minus seven degrees overnight.
Inspector Kemp said those who have left cars outside need to make sure their whole windscreen is clear before driving.
Police also advised of icy conditions on State Highway 58 Pauatahanui and Paekakariki Hill Rd.
