Police are warning motorists to keep an eye out for children as they head back to school today.
National Police manager roading policing superintendent Carey Griffiths said drivers needed to take extra care, especially around schools as children headed back to class after two weeks holiday.
"With children returning to school ... many families getting back into the routine of the school drop-off and pick-up, there is going to be more congestion on the roads in and around schools," he said.
Drivers needed to stick to the speed limit, give cyclists a wide berth and slow to 20km/h when driving past a stationary school bus, Mr Griffiths said.
"It's important therefore that all drivers be aware of their speed and keep a watch out for children, particularly as there will be more kids walking, cycling and bussing to school."
