Motorists are being asked to avoid State Highway 3 between Te Kuiti and New Plymouth after a crash closed the road.
The NZ Transport Agency said the crash took place near Mahoenui.
As there is no official detour, the agency said people should avoid the area or delay their journey if possible.
Police were not yet able to provide more information about the crash.
