A motorist was left in a critical condition after their vehicle slammed into a tree near Thames late last night.
Emergency services were called out to the single-vehicle crash at the intersection of SH25 and Kopu Rd shortly before midnight.
The driver was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed using hydraulic gear, before being taken to Waikato Hospital in what a St John ambulance spokeswoman described as a critical condition.
Police also had to close a section of SH25, which has since re-opened.
