A middle-aged woman is dead after her car hit a horse in Waikato last night.
The woman was travelling south on Hopkins Rd, south of Matamata, when her vehicle hit the horse.
Emergency services were told of the incident at 6.20pm and called relatives of the woman to the crash scene soon after they arrived, police said. Members of her family lived nearby. "The car travelled a distance along the road before it crashed through a driveway and into a tree, where it came to a stop."
The horse also died. A vet was called but it was unclear whether the horse had to be put down.
Diversions were put in place at the intersection of Hopkins Rd and State Highway 29, and at Hopkins Rd and Hinuera Rd.
