Motorcyclists are being urged to change their attitudes towards road safety, following a number of recent crashes which have left one rider dead.
District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace said a 36-year-old motorcyclist died in hospital overnight after crashing into a vehicle turning into a driveway on Bruntwood Road in Tamahere, near Hamilton.
It appeared the rider accelerated to pass other vehicles in a line of traffic when the accident occurred, she said.
Another motorcyclist was recovering from injuries in hospital after failing to negotiate a bend and crashing into a barbed wire fence last Wednesday.
Families, emergency services and the community in general were being called on to pick up the pieces all too often in situations where motorcyclists are putting themselves and other road users at risk, Inspector Grace said.
