KEY POINTS:
Two motorcyclists were recovering today after crashing into a police car which did a U-turn in front of them in the Upper Buller Gorge yesterday.
The Police Complaints Authority has been called in to investigate the crash, which happened about 2.45pm yesterday on State Highway 6 in the Upper Buller Gorge.
Senior Sergeant Eric Davy of Tasman Police said the police car, which was being driven by an experienced officer, did the U-turn after seeing a third motorcyclist allegedly speeding.
As he was turning, the officer's car was struck on the left hand side by two motorcyclists.
One motorcyclist was airlifted to Nelson Hospital with serious injuries, believed to include multiple broken bones, while the second was taken by land to Murchison Hospital. The policeman was not injured.
SH 6 was closed for about five hours to allow investigators to examine the scene.
