A man who died when his motorcycle and a car collided in Waikato at the weekend was part of a larger group returning to Auckland from a tour of the South Island.
Police have identified him as 24-year-old Chinese national Shixun Jiang. He was travelling north on State Highway 1 at Taupiri when the crash occurred on Saturday at 9.30pm, police said.
"Initial indications are Mr Jiang's group had crossed Cook Strait earlier in the day and were heading north back to Auckland when the crash happened," Inspector Rob Lindsay said.
"It appears members of the group riding ahead of Mr Jiang [and] have passed a northbound car, but as he has gone to follow suit he has collided with an oncoming Hyundai 4x4 in the southbound lane."
The car's occupants were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
