Motorcyclist dies at track open day

A motorcyclist has died after crashing his bike during an open day at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park north of Te Kauwhata in the Waikato.

The crash happened at about 9:35am this morning and no other vehicles were involved.

Police officers and serious crash unit investigators are at the scene.

Next of kin are still being notified.

Hampton Downs CEO Jamie Keft says the cause of the crash has not yet been established.

His staff will be conducting an evaluation later today to see whether they can improve their safety proceedures.

The driver was experienced and had been at the track before, he says.
