Motorcyclist dies after hit and run in Whanganui

The person seriously injured in a hit and run in Whanganui tonight has died.

Emergency services were called to help a badly injured motorcyclist after the crash on Anzac Parade, near Georgetti Rd, in Whanganui just after 6pm.

On arrival the car and any occupants had fled the scene, a police spokesman said earlier tonight.

Just after 8.30pm a police spokeswoman confirmed the injured person since had died.

"One person is assisting police in relation to the vehicle that was reported to have left the scene."

The road was closed with diversions in place while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene, she said.

"Motorists should continue to avoid the area."
