A motorcyclist was killed on State Highway 6 near Greymouth yesterday, after crashing into a bridge.
The rider was travelling with a group, police said.
"Early indications are that speed may be a contributing factor to the crash," Sergeant Brett Cooper said.
Emergency services arrived at the scene about 5.10pm, with police continuing scene investigations, he said.
Police were interviewing witnesses and would release the rider's name after next of kin had been told.
