A motorcyclist crashed after fleeing police in Whakatane this afternoon.
Police said they tried to carry out a routine traffic stop on The Strand about 1pm.
An officer activated their patrol car's flashing lights and siren, but the motorcyclist did not stop and sped away down Pyne and McAlister streets.
Police lost sight of the motorcycle and a member of the public who had seen it directed the officer on to Apanui Ave.
The motorcycle had crashed on the road and the rider was taken to Whakatane Hospital with minor injuries.
