Motorbike rider dead north of Auckland

One man has died and another is in a serious condition in hospital after a motorbike veered off the road near Auckland this morning.

Police and ambulance services were called to a crash in Dairy Flat north of Auckland at about 1.44am today, said police.

"A high powered motorcycle failed to take a corner and left the road in a rural area.''

Police said a 52-year-old man was thrown from the motor cycle he was driving, and died at the scene.

The other 52-year-old pillion passenger survived the crash, and was taken to Auckland Hospital.

He is in a serious condition with multiple leg fractures, police said.

The Serious Crash Unit have carried out a scene examination.

Police said no further comment will be made until the next of kin have been informed.
