Motorbike crash on remote beach kills teen

A teenager has died after a motorbike crash on a beach in Northland today.

Police said the male rider in his late teens suffered fatal head injuries after falling from the bike on the beach at Shipwreck Bay, near Kaitaia, Northland. He was local to the area.

The area is popular for its sand dunes.

Police were at the scene of the crash, which they said was isolated and inaccessible by road.

They said it would be some time before the body could be recovered.

In a separate incident, a man died when a car and truck collided at the intersection of Awatere Valley Road and Redwood Pass Road at Seddon in Marlborough at about 1.50pm this afternoon.

Police said this brought the official holiday road toll to 13.
