Have you heard of whips, booms, sweeps, pivot points, transition point, cuts, scrubbing and seat bounce?
They may get mentioned from time to time in general conversation but if you talk to a motocross rider they will create a definite excitement as they are of great importance when competing in that sport.
In the Wairarapa we have three clubs, Masterton, Martinborough and Bush Riders (Pahiatua), all of which operate on a voluntary basis and have a high number of members ranging between 100 and 200.
Each of the clubs try to hold a local meeting at least once a month so as to allow their members to regularly fine tune their riding skills. They all have different grades and cl;ass of riders with the age of the latter ranging from three years to over 50yrs.
The bikes too can vary, ranging as they do from 50cc to 500cc.
Wairarapa is fortunate to have a good many talented riders to not only compete locally but nationally as well. It is a grand sight to see them in action, riders like Scott Robinson, Travis Edwards, Bjarne Fredrikson, Jay Langlands, Sam Guise, Camden Bhutler and Byron Morrison.
The idea of writing this article, and others that follow, is to help increase public awareness of motocross, a sport which requires the same dedication as any other sport is full potential is to be realised. In fact, from a physical viewpoint it has to be one of the most demanding sports of all.
It is pleasing to see the number of parents who band together to ensure that the youngsters learn the fundamentals of motocross in the approved manner. It is also pleasing that a number of businesses are prepared to help in that respect as well with Langlands Motorcycles a notable example in that regard.
On the competitive scene the winter season is about to get serious and this will involve local riders travelling to Hawke's Bay for the Magic Suzuki Series and also contesting the Spectro Series which is raced at six different venues spread through the lower North Island.
The local clubs will, of course , also be holding their events and anybody wanting to join up can contact them at Masterton (063708642), Martinborough (063086300) and Bush Riders (063766973).
It is hoped to have results from these events, and those outside the region, ready in time to publish in my next column..
Finally, it is disappointing to report of vandalism occurring at the Masterton club's headquarters.
All the fences had been torn down when my family arrived there last Sunday and comment from seven-year-old son that whoever was responsible were a "pack of idiots" suggested he had more intelligence than them!
Until next time let the dirt fly and the jumps be high.
Nuki Gordon's motocross column will appear regularly in the Times-Age.
