The mother of a teenager killed on a hunting trip said she had mixed feelings about his girlfriend's father being charged with delivering the fatal shot.
Former Taradale High School pupil Aron Timms died the day before his 19th birthday during a visit to the Taraweras three months ago.
His mother, Lorraine Timms, said: "I have been going through an emotional time - I am angry, sad and grumpy. It was an accident that shouldn't have happened."
Aron died instantly after a single gunshot to the chest. At the time Porter said he mistook him for a deer.
Aron, captain of a local club, won a vast array of trophies. "He had a good eye," said his father, Brian.
Aron and girlfriend Nicole Porter had known each other for three years and shared a love of the outdoors. The couple had been on many hunting and fishing trips together.
Aron's death has taken its toll on both families but they remain in touch.
"Nicole will always be Aron's girlfriend," said Lorraine. "I'll always be there for her."
She said she felt empathy for the Porters. "They are going through something slightly different but the same as us if you know what I mean."
