Two police officers required medical treatment after being bitten by a mother and son in a street-side scuffle in New Plymouth.
The Taranaki Daily News reported the officers were called to settle a domestic dispute between a mother and her teenage son this week.
But when they arrived, the pair turned on the officers, biting them on the arms.
A passing motorist came to the aid of the officers and called for assistance on the police radio.
"The officers were grateful for the help but the motorist left before they were able to thank him," Senior Sergeant Selwyn Wansbrough said.
The officers returned to work after their bite wounds were checked.
A 34-year-old New Plymouth woman is to appear in the New Plymouth District Court on February 22 charged with assault with intent to injure and obstructing police.
A 16-year-old boy, also charged with assault, will be referred to Youth Aid.
