KEY POINTS:
Two youths have been charged over the drive-by shooting of an elderly woman, after the mother of one of the pair personally escorted her son to the police station.
The 80-year-old victim was walking to her home on December 3 when she heard a "popping sound" and felt a "sharp, stinging sensation" between her shoulders.
Police were called after a man reported seeing a shot fired from a passing car.
After finding the woman, police launched an investigation, calling for information on a Red Mazda Estima and a bb air gun.
Sergeant Grant Hand said the mother of one of the two 18-year-olds arrested today identified the car and gun as belonging to her son and confronted him.
"After his explanation the mother decided to personally escort her son to police," Mr Hand said.
Police arrested the youth and subsequently identified and arrested his alleged co-offender, charging both with firearms offences.
The two warehouse assistants - one from Paremoremo and the other from Northcross face a possible three-year prison term or fine of up to $4000.
They have been bailed to appear in North Shore District Court on Thursday.
"Police applaud the mother for her responsible decision and actions," Mr Hand said.
"There are instances where parents take a no-nonsense approach if a member of their immediate or extended family breaks the law. This is excellent example."
He said the two accused had co-operated with police and were feeling remorseful and the elderly victim had been notified of their arrests.
"In these festive days prior to Christmas, it's timely to urge families and others to be considerate of the welfare and well being of our elders, especially those who prefer to be independent and currently live alone," Sergeant Hand said.
