KEY POINTS:
Fewer people are staying in short term accommodation, such as motels and camping grounds, compared with this time last year, Statistics New Zealand said today.
The numbers had dropped by 4 per cent in August compared with a year earlier - the third consecutive month to show a decrease in numbers, statistician Geoff Bascand said.
Guest nights decreased in motels, hostels, hosted accommodation and caravan parks, but rose in hotel stays.
This year, 11 of the 12 regions had fewer guest nights, with Otago and Northland showing the largest decreases.
