KEY POINTS:
An Auckland museum is running a school holiday programme focusing on the importance of energy efficiency and sustainability.
Motat's Exploring Energy is an interactive science-themed programme teaching children about technology and the environment.
Marketing manager Angela Willis said it was important to teach children about environmental challenges.
"It is something that I believe we are all going to have to concentrate on and think about in the future."
Activities include a human gyroscope, a bungy run and demonstrations of new technology, teaching children about gravitational, kinetic and renewable energy.
Miss Willis said: "The children are learning without actually realising they are learning. We always aim to educate our visitors in a fun way."
She said the museum was concerned not only with history, but with contemporary issues too.
"[Exploring Energy] is an appropriate topic at this time," given fuel prices and people thinking more about saving energy."
Motat has taken steps to become more environmentally focused by recycling water, switching to energy-saving lightbulbs, switching off lights to conserve energy and shredding waste paper, which is given to the neighbouring zoo to use.
"Motat is doing its part to save the environment, because obviously if everyone does a little something it will make a big difference."
Exploring Energy will run every day through the school holidays, to July 20, 10am to 4.30pm.
Motat also has a science roadshow taking place at the same time.
