The rediscovery of the southern salt marsh mosquito and its larvae in Kaipara Harbour in Northland has authorities scrambling to finally eradicate the pest.
After a local wet season, surveillance teams found small numbers of the insects in two spots in the southern Kaipara.
The mosquito is a potential carrier for Ross River virus, which can cause people to suffer from muscle pain, flu symptoms and rashes.
