Morison takes sprint double

Wairarapa athletes made a huge impression at the North Island secondary schools track and field championships at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland over the weekend, with a medal haul of seven gold, three silver and one bronze.

Mikael Starzynski and Jonty Morison won four of the gold medals between them.

Starzynski clocked 38.16s in taking out the junior boys 300m title, 08s ahead of runner-up Brian Lealiifano of Auckland. and more than 1s clear of third-placed Liam Haddock of Counties-Manukau. In the junior boys 800m, Starzynski prevailed with a time of 2min 7.26s. Second in 2.07.98 was North Harbour's Matt Conroy with Marino Doyle of Wellington third in 2.08.47.

Morison won the coveted senior boys sprint double. He had a battle royal with Jordan Bolland of North Harbour in the 100m final, with Morison clocking 11.16 and Bolland 11.17. Third in 11.45 was Jonathan O'Donnell of Waikato-Bay of Plenty. It was easier going for Morison in the 200m final, which he won in a personal best of 21.89. Runner-up was Wellington's Alex Haye in 22.20 and third Auckland's Sam McConnell in 22.32.

Wairarapa's Gerard Hickey prevailed in the intermediate boys high jump with a leap of 1.83m which he made at his third attempt. Second was Tyler Wood of Waikato Bay of Plenty with 1.80m who edged out teammate Tevita Finau on countback.

Other Wairarapa gold winners were Alison Andrews-Paul and Emma Kruszona. Andrews-Paul won the senior girls 400m by a decisive margin. She ran 56.72 with Meg Hamilton-Reid of Waikato Bay of Plenty second in 59.07 and Ariana Lord, also of Waikato Bay of Plenty, third in 59.42. Kruszona was an equally comfortable winner of the senior girls hammer throw title with a best 43.49m. North Harbour's Makenzie Vitasovich was second with 40.08m and Manawatu's Elisha Byrne third with 39.72m.

There were three silver medals for Keelan Ward in the senior boys Para events over 100, 200m and 400m - all of which he completed in personal best times, while Vincent Capes took away the bronze in the senior boys hammer throw with a distance of 31.12m.

-Two Wairarapa sprinters and one field eventer have been included in the 60-strong team named by Athletics New Zealand for the Oceania championships in Cairns, Australia, in May. Jonty Morison will contest the senior men's 100m and 200m events while Keelan Ward will race in the Para T20 400m and Ashley Exeter will compete in the discus and shot put for athletes with a disability.
