Morgan SP1 adds bells, whistles and all the rest

The steampunk-inspired beast is complete with superfluous switches.

Morgan takes a cue from the cult following of steampunk fashion

Morgan's special projects division has kept the company's well-deserved name for quirky and weird design with a crazy new custom car.

The steampunk-inspired SP1, built on commission, is based on Morgan's 2009 LifeCar concept.

The SP1 arrives at about the time the company's cancelled Eva GT was scheduled to have been delivered, after first having been delayed with promises of new magnesium tech.

Rather than becoming another heritage oddity in the catalogue, this is a oncer - although bound to inspire other steampunk machines from the company that proudly proclaims itself Britain's last privately owned car company.

The SP1 is powered by a free-breathing 3.7-litre Ford V6, as per the Morgan V6 Roadster, and the aluminium body is formed with an English wheel over a wooden frame.

In true steampunk fashion, there are bits and piece that aren't completely necessary to the actual operation of the car - like a row of roof-mounted switches which must be flicked in order to "prepare for flight". Then the last toggle switch will actually fire up the engine.

The infotainment system combines beautiful woods and leather with a piece of Apple. The iPad, which drives the entertainment systems, is held in place by hand-stitched leather straps.
