Police are appealing for witnesses after a 13-year-old Hamilton schoolboy was hit by a car this morning and is now fighting for his life in hospital.
It appeared the boy stepped in front of the car while crossing Ruakura Rd in east Hamilton about 8.15am and the driver was unable to avoid him, police said.
He was in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit this afternoon.
It is believed the Hamilton Boys' High School student was hit by a Mazda Lantis driven by a 17-year-old man.
Police investigations indicate the boy may have been following a friend who had already run across the road, when he was hit by the car in the 80km/h zone.
The road was very busy at the time of the incident, and police said they would like to hear from witnesses.
