KEY POINTS:
More than 100 firefighters and 18 appliances were called out to battle a blaze today at an Auckland industrial building containing old car bodies.
Fire crews arrived at the Cash for Scrap premises in Mangere about 1.20pm and the fire was brought under control by late afternoon.
Firefighters were expected to remain at the site in Tidal Rd through the evening and possibly until morning.
Fire Service spokesman Jaron Phillips said the service was alerted by callers reporting a car exploding.
When fire crews arrived, a building measuring 64m by 40m was well alight and car bodies inside were in flames.
"The fire is now under control," Mr Phillips said.
"Firefighters are currently ventilating the building and pulling car bodies out. They will there well into the night."
Mr Phillips said the blaze, which was in an industrial zone, was large enough that people kilometres away reported seeing it.
While people were understood to have been in the building when the fire started, no injuries were reported.
