The nervous wait is over for 140,000 students who sat NCEA last year.
Results began arriving in letterboxes around the country yesterday and were available on the NZ Qualifications Authority website from lunch time.
Students can achieve NCEA at three levels, and 2009 results showed a slight increase in the number of students gaining endorsed certificates.
Endorsed certificates were introduced in 2007 and are awarded to students who gain 50 or more credits with merit or excellence.
Merit endorsements were awarded to 11,367 students in level 1, 7204 in level 2 and 4785 in level 3.
A further 3182 students in level 1, 2043 in level 2 and 1171 in level 3 gained an excellence endorsement.
A total of 20,454 candidates gained University Entrance.
Students who sat New Zealand Scholarship exams will have to wait until mid-February for their results to be delivered.
The NZQA's deputy chief executive for qualifications, Bali Haque, said the results were encouraging.
"There is an overall increase in the proportion of students gaining endorsed certificates. This indicates that Certificate Endorsement is proving a motivating factor for students."
New Zealand is the only country in the world to return marked examination papers to students. This will take place from January 18, with papers delivered over a fortnight.
Students have until February 19 to apply for reviews and reconsiderations. A review can be requested if a candidate believes a processing error has been made with their exam paper, such as incorrect transfer of grades.
Reconsideration involves remarking the exam and costs $20 for each application, which is refunded if the application is successful.
Full, national NCEA statistics will be available in March.
