Another "round" of robins is planned for release at Whangarei's Bream Head Scenic Reserve next week, the culmination of a translocation programme that has been many years in the making.
It will be the second release of 20 North Island robins, or toutouwai, at the reserve, following a successful trial release on to the eastern end of the Bream Head peninsula on April 8.
Chairman of the Bream Head Conservation Trust Greg Innes said the organisation has been working towards these events since it was formed in 2001. "We wanted to restore the reserve to its original healthy, noisy, bird-filled state, which has meant years of intensive predator control over the entire reserve."
When enough birds have been captured, processed and boxed, they will be driven to Bream Head in the cool of the night for release on May 12, 13 or 14, depending on how well the collection process goes and how the birds are faring.
