More rain for most of the country to finish off wet weekend

The wet weekend will continue today with showers forecast for most of the country, but rain should ease in most places as the day wears on.

A south easterly flow was responsible for the rain today, following in the wake of the front which caused yesterday's showers.

MetService meteorologist Arno Dyason said as the day wore on most parts of the country would begin to fine up, particularly in the North Island.

"In the evening in the south and west on the South Island, showers will get a little bit heavier again."

According to MetService, the rain will be sticking around until at least mid week, with showers spreading to most of the country on Monday and becoming heavy in the far south at first.

Tuesday and Wednesday should be finer, with cloudy periods and brief showers forecast around the country.

Auckland: Fine spells, but a few showers, mainly morning. Strong south westerly. High: 19C Low: 14C

Hamilton: Showers becoming few and far between morning. Strong south westerly. High: 19C Low: 11C

Napier: Mainly sunny, chance shower. Gusty westerly eases. High: 23C Low: 11C

Wellington: Showers clear afternoon to fine spells. Strong southerly dies. High: 15C Low: 10C

Blenheim: Few morning showers, then mostly sunny. Easterlies. High: 18C Low: 7C

Greymouth: Occasional showers. Southwesterlies. High: 16C Low: 10C

Dunedin: Cloudy periods. Showers, mainly in the evening. Southwest. High 17C Low: 9C
