All sailings on a recently refurbished Interislander ferry have been suddenly cancelled as mechanical problems hit one of the fleet's trouble-prone vessels.
The Aratere, which spent months on dry dock after it lost a propeller in Cook Strait in 2014, is unexpectedly out of action with all crossings cancelled across the channel for the next two days.
KiwiRail, which owns Interislander, today confirmed steering issues had been discovered on the Aratere ferry at the weekend.
Interislander operations manager Peter Mathews said the Kaiarahi had been brought back into service as engineers worked with the Aratere's manufacturers to fix worn seals on the port side steering gear.
"We are unsure what has caused the seals to degrade but we expect to have more information later today or tomorrow," he said.
