More heavy rain to pelt New Zealand

The worst of Wellington's wild weekend weather is over, but more heavy rain is on its way early next week, MetService says.

MetService forecaster Erick Brenstrum said nearly 50mm of rain fell in parts of the city yesterday, but this morning it was relatively dry.

"The heavy rain eased off overnight. We've got a little bit of cloud, but the sun's starting to break through."

Auckland and Christchurch were also in for a cloudy day, with a couple of showery periods and most of the east coast of the country, from Gisborne to Otago, would see scattered showers.

MetService would issue heavy rain warnings for the west of the South Island later today, Brenstrum said.

Another bout of heavy rain was expected to hit the North Island on Tuesday morning.

The Wellington region was drenched yesterday, causing slips which evacuated homes and strong winds felled a tree in Tawa, blocking the main road.

WeatherWatch said weak La Nina conditions were sweeping across the country, bringing wet weather to many North Island areas, as well as parts of the South Island.

The weather patterns were expected to continue into the summer season.

Typically, La Niña brought warmer land and sea temperatures but also more rain.

So Kiwis could expect cloudier weather in coastal areas, afternoon showers inland and an abundance of easterlies this summer, WeatherWatch said.

Whangarei: A few morning showers, then fine spells and a high of 20C.
Auckland: Temperatures up to 17C, cloudy periods and a few morning showers.
Hamilton: Southwesterlies, possible morning showers and sunny spells. Temperatures up to 18C.
Tauranga: Mostly fine, with highs of 19C.
Wellington: Morning shower or two followed by sunny spells and a high of 16C.
Christchurch: Cloudy periods and easterlies developing. High of 14C.
Dunedin: Cloudy periods and a chance of showers. Southeasterlies developing and a high of 13C.
