A further $8 million for the Adult Literacy Strategy, spread over the next four years, would be in next week's budget, the Government said today.
Associate Education Minister Marian Hobbs said the additional funding would bring the total committed to the strategy to $53 million over the period.
Ms Hobbs said there was increasing demand for services provided through the strategy.
"As a country and as a people we need concerted action to raise levels of literacy among our adult population," she said.
"There will be no sustainable future for our growing knowledge economy without urgent action."
