The age range of women eligible for free breast screening has been extended but National MP Lynda Scott says the resources are not there for tests to be done.
The size of the BreastScreen Aotearoa programme was effectively doubled yesterday to 200,000 when the lower age limit was dropped to 45 and the upper raised to 69. Previously the age range was 50 to 64.
Dr Scott said she had been called by a woman who met the criteria but was unable to get an answer from her screening provider about when she would get an appointment and wondered if she should pay for one.
Health Minister Annette King acknowledged women might have to wait for their first appointment but once in would receive two-yearly mammograms.
