His relatives were joined at the hospital by colleagues from Sky, many of whom Mr Dawson had been socialising with shortly before the attack.
The group were unwinding at Viaduct bars after a tough Rugby World Cup schedule when Mr Dawson wandered away.
Those who knew him said that was a common occurrence while he was out drinking so they weren't overly concerned when he couldn't be found.
However, workmate Hamida Kapsin-Ali posted this message online: "Life is too precious [so] be careful when you're out with family and friends, ensure that you know that they will be safe when you part ways after a night out."
She said Mr Dawson's death was "a downer to what has been an awesome tournament".
Another friend, who asked not to be named, said he was a popular, reliable man who was always the first person friends would go to if they needed help.
Before Mr Dawson died, three men - Kit John Murray, Mona Christo Feterika and Antoni Te Moko Rogers - were arrested and charged with assault, but more serious charges could now be laid.
Detective Inspector Scott Beard, of Auckland City police, yesterday confirmed that Mr Dawson's death would be taken into consideration when it was decided what, if any, additional charges would be laid.
Several witnesses had been spoken to by police over the bashing, which occurred about 1.30am on Friday.
It's thought Mr Dawson was in Spy Bar, chatting to staff, just before the attack.
One colleague of his was told he had made a "cheeky" comment to some men before he was hit, and another person saw him arguing before he was punched and fell to the ground.
Feterika - who was also charged with possession of methamphetamine - and Rogers are on bail.
Murray is in custody until a bail hearing this week
Mr Dawson's funeral will be in Christchurch.
