Auckland ratepayers are being asked to fork out almost $1 million extra to finish the Aotea Square redevelopment.
The square was formally reopened last October after an $80.7m revamp.
Councillors this week approved funding a shortfall, including $225,000 to replace carpark vents which posed a health and safety risk.
Council spokeswoman Lisa Inder said the edge of the vents were designed to act as seating, which meant they were low to the ground. "Concern has been raised that if a small child was able to run freely over them their foot might fall in between the grille frames."
