Red Star were in the box seat thanks largely to a Nick Moorcock whirlwind innings at the end of the first day's play in their Bidwell Cup Wairarapa senior men's cricket match with Wairarapa College at the Pugh Sportsbowl in Masterton on Saturday.
In the other games, Rathkeale was looking down the barrel of a signficant first innings deficit unless it can get a mess of early wickets next weekend, while Greytown had the edge over Lansdowne.
In a game of contrasting fortunes, Wairarapa College batted first and apart from Cameron Stone (35) and J.Keen (42) they struggled against an accurate Red Star attack and were all out for just 113 made in 50 overs.
Nick Moorcock was the fourth bowler used by Red Star and finished with 3-15 from his seven overs while Carwyn Caffell was sixth jn line and ended with 3-18 from nine overs.
Red Star's first innings started disastrously with two wickets falling before a run had been scored but a 48-run partnership between Shane Tyacke (19) and Rex Davies (38) steadied the ship.
Then they slumped to be 66-5 and this time it was Nick Moorcock who came to the rescue, hitting four fours and one six in his 47 and seeing Red Star through to 138-8 at stumps. Moorcock had already played a leading role in the Red Star bowling line-up, picking up three wickets for just 15 runs off seven overs.
Paceman Seth Rance was the spearhead of the Wairarapa College attack, taking 4-38 from his 15 overs.
