People battling financial pressures of the recession need to know they are not alone and help is available.
Demand for counselling services has increased this year, spurred by people worried about employment and finances, said Home and Family Counselling director Mary Gray.
"People are feeling under more stress and the impact of less working hours or threat of redundancy changes dynamics in families," she said.
Gray said people who were depressed, or had friends or family suffering from depression needed to communicate. "Isolating oneself is so destructive. They need to express their feelings. They need to realise they've got some options and alternatives."
Lifeline's director of counselling services Rita Inch said the organisation spoke to 229 people last month whose main concern was depression - 30 per cent more than in the same month last year.
