A moderate earthquake rattled Fiordland at 5.12pm.
The magnitude 4.0 tremor was centred 35km west of Te Anau at a depth of 6km, GeoNet said.
Its Mercalli Intensity was 5 - meaning the strength of the quake felt on the earth's surface.
