Mahunga Golf Club
The Mahunga men's interclub teams were in action last Saturday and they met mixed results.
The division 11 team were at home to Kapiti and the team recorded a much-improved result against the team that had held them to a draw at Kapiti earlier in the competition. Their 12 to 2 win keeps them at the top of the table, with a margin of 5 points from the second-placed team.
The division 7 team were playing against the Masterton team on their course and the result was a 7-8 scoreline.
With that result, the Mahunga team remain at the top of the table, the margin over their nearest challenger has narrowed considerably to just 5 points.
The Marquis Shield team were also in action during the weekend, with a match against Martin- borough at Carterton on Sunday. This was expected to be a close match and so it proved to be. Mahunga got off to a good start, with the junior players taking three of the four matches. But the tie was evened up in the intermediates, with Mahunga taking a win and a halved match. But it was the seniors who eked out the team win, by winning two and halving one of the matches, to leave a final scoreline of seven matches to five. In the Fourball matches, it was a slightly different matter. The junior division had Mahunga winning one and halving the other, while the intermediate matches both went to Martinborough and, with the senior matches shared at one apiece, it was a win to Martinborough in that contest.
The women's Tilson Salver team were playing Featherston at Featherston on Sunday and, while many of the matches were close, it was Featherston who took the honours.
The junior pennants team played Carterton at Mahunga on Sunday as well, and they took the match by 112 points to 89 to go through the series unbeaten, and they have qualified for the final next month.
The result still has Mahunga at the top of the points table by three points from Eketahuna, who they play in the final round at Carterton in two weeks. The divisional trophies has Mahunga out of contention in the Workman Cup, where they are more than four points behind the leaders, but it is a bit better in the other divisions. The Intermediate division are second-equal place, one point behind the leaders Eketahuna, and they are in the lead in the Sutherland Trophy for the Junior division.
Back at home on Saturday, the club competition was a par round. The best scores were returned in the second group, with Graeme Bound being 7up to just edged out Kevin Gibbs on 6up, with a gap back to Phillip Granich on square.
The first group saw mark Logan at the top with a score of 4up, with Kurt Karaitiana the runner-up on 2up, with Ngaire Graham and Nooroa Rota both finishing on 1up.
The Makes Cents nearest to the pin went to Nooroa Rota, and the Mitre 10 on the third and the All Teed Up on the fourth went to Ngaire Graham. The McAuley's Transport on the sixth hole went to Michelle Coley, the Pak'n Save Masterton went to Kurt Karaitiana, and Mark Logan took the Dinah and Deb Keats Professionals Real Estate on the 17th hole, while no one struck the Alister Bruce Affordable Sheds on the 10th hole. There were no holes in two for the day.
