KEY POINTS:
A missing kayaker spent the night on the bank of the Hutt River before being found this morning.
The man's kayak got stuck under logs before he was thrown out and managed to scramble onto the river bank, said Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman Logan Taylor.
Mr Taylor said it was getting dark and would have been dangerous for the man to try and scale the steep hill or go back into the water.
He said the man was well-prepared with a wetsuit, life jacket and gloves.
"He's in a good condition, he's just a bit cold," Mr Taylor said.
Wellington police communications shift commander Bruce McKay said police were alerted by the man's friend at about 7pm last night but due to low cloud and bad light the search had to be called off.
The search was re-started at first light this morning and the man was found shortly afterwards, Mr McKay said.
